Driving around this holiday weekend the local radio stations have been playing Memorial Day tributes for those who have served our country. Not just the most recent soldiers, or the first soldiers, but all those in between as well. It was interesting to hear of the stories the Veterans told, about how their friend was next to them one minute and gone the next. Most of the stories were of devastation and hurt, but there was some of triumph and success. During the tribute they were playing background music along with the stories, it was when the bagpipes came on playing Amazing Grace that it got to me. As tears welled up in my eyes, I thought of my grandfather.

Ronald Joe Jensen served in the United States Air Force. I always love hearing stories of my grandfather and my grandmother alike. My grandfather was one of the happiest people I know. No, I don't think he ever had to go to war for our country, but he later on lost his battle with cancer. At his funeral there was a flag draped over his casket. It made me proud to see that, someone in my family was willing to fight for our country. It was later folded and presented to my grandmother. The 21 gun salute was also presented before the funeral was over, I remember listening to every shot. I remember the services being patriotic, a thanks from our country.

I think most people now days think that Memorial Day is just another holiday off work, a day for barbeque's, and the start of summer. They forget that its the day we remember our fallen brothers and sisters, and those that made it through the hell we call War.
Arlington National CemetarySo from the bottom of my heart, on Memorial Day, I say Thank You. Thank You for making it possible for me to sleep peacefully in my bed at night, for allowing me to live in a country that is Free, and letting me fly the colors of this great country.
